What is the deal with the recall of pet food? My cat died from kidney failure about two months ago?

I fed him some of the brands pet foods on the recall list, how do I know whether or not his condition was not caused by this food? His condition was rather sudden and did not give us a lot of warning. My whole family was devestated by his death. We consider our animals part of the family!

I’m so sorry about your cat’s death – I lost my oldest love last March (he had a thyroid disorder & was 17 years old) – I know how bad this can hurt. I think you can probably tell if your cat’s death was the result of recalled food based on it’s symptoms when it got sick. Most likely it would have had symptoms of kidney disease, like frequent urination, consuming lots of water, weakness and muscle loss, vomiting and/or other tummy problems. If the vet did any bloodwork s/he would have found the blood urea nitrogen (BUN) level to be too high. Also, some pets were refusing to eat, as if they sensed that something was wrong with their food. However, even if you do decide that your cat was a victim of the recalled food, there’s really no way to prove anything- so I’m not sure if knowing this answer will really help.

The best thing to do (if you have any other pets) is to prevent this tragedy from happening again by feeding them a safe, healthy food. During the recalls I was really scared & worried so I did some research to find a good safe good. I settled on Life’s Abundance from HealtyPetNet, as it is made in the USA and most important, it has never been recalled! It’s formulated by a holistic veterinarian and costs the same as many other “premium” foods- even though it is higher quality than most of them. If you’re interested I can give you a website link. Again, I am sorry about your loss and hope you won’t have to ever go thru that again.
